Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal Crown (PFM)
The metal framework gives the restoration high fracture resistance. However, the 'opaque' layer used to mask the color of the metal can reduce the light transmission of the restoration, making it look more matte (high opacity). It is generally preferred as a cost-effective solution in posterior areas where aesthetics are secondary and chewing load is very high.
Estimated duration: First appointment takes 60-90 minutes, permanent crown preparation in the lab takes 2-3 weeks. Lifespan can range from 10-15 up to 30 years with proper care.
